Witte Residence Hall Renovation
Project Size: 10.5M
Client: CD Smith Construction Inc.
Owner: University Housing
Witte Residence Hall, which opened in 1964, is a two-tower structure that is home to 1,150 residents in double rooms.
Upgrades included a new connecting link to connect the two towers of Witte on all floors, including new elevators and new floor lounges in this central section. New expanded bathrooms will be created on each resident floor. A new resident floor will be added to the top of the building to compensate for resident rooms that will be displaced by the renovations. The first floor and basement levels will also see upgrades with improved classroom, kitchen, and studying spaces.
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems were replaced adding individual temperature controls in rooms and air conditioning throughout the building (including resident rooms). A four pipe fan coil system was utilized for this installation. To meet the new heating requirements, a complete upgrade to the Steam PRV system was installed, which included additional hot water heat exchanges for both heating and plumbing. As A/C was added to the residence rooms, a complete new chilled water pumping system was also installed. Common spaces, corridors and bathrooms are served by energy recovery air handlers serving each tower.
Standby electrical generation equipment was also installed in the basement. As such, an engine exhaust system was installed from the basement to the roof of the 11th floor.
